The rally received almost totally-favorable coverage in both Chicago newspapers and national media, propelled in part by newspaper czar William Randolph Hearst. Often emphasized was the patriotic nature of the rally and the unexpected fact that bobbysoxers — usually portrayed in the media as swooning over popular singers such as Frank Sinatra — found religious rallies appealing.
