Dr. Kathryn Long, Wheaton College, Emeritus
American missionary Catherine Peeke with a Waorani helper translating the New Testament into the Wao language
The deaths of five missionaries in 1956 at the hands of the Waorani (“aucas”) was the defining
missionary martyr story for American evangelicals during the second half of the twentieth century.
Much less well known is what happened in Ecuador after the men’s deaths. Historian Kathryn Long set
out to reconstruct the part of the story that was largely untold. She will talk about the discoveries and
challenges in using archival research to create a historical narrative.
Accompanying the lecture will be an exhibit of photographs and documents from the BGC Archives
about the outreach of American missionaries to the Waorani. There will e a reception following the lecture.
