In 1995, 1996, and 1997, the staff of the archives held one day workshops entitled "Starting a Church Archives." No further workshops are currently planned.
The purpose of the workshop was rather specialized. It was to help volunteer, nonprofessional church archivists (or would-be church archivists) who were trying to gather, preserve, and make available the records of their own congregation. Among the topics covered in the workshop were important questions to consider before starting an archives, the archives' mission statement, staffing the archives, what to collect and where to keep it, doing oral history , organizing the archives, making the archives part of the life of the congregation, the benefits of a church archives, and resources for the church archivist.
The tapes and handouts from the 1996 workshop are available for $20. Anyone interested in getting this material should send a check or money order for this amount, made out to "Archives of the Billy Graham Center" to this address:
