June 10, 1945. Telegram from William Randolph Hearst to editors of his newspapers nationwide, telling them to give favorable coverage to Youth for Christ events. If Hearst followed YFC events at all, he probably became aware of Graham, since Graham was one of the organization’s premier speakers. Hearst is reported in many sources as having sent a similar telegram to the editors of his papers in Los Angeles and perhaps elsewhere toward the end of October 1949, telling them to “Puff Graham.” The exact chain of events that led to Hearst’s action and his motives remain a mystery. From Collection 285, Box 29, Folder 2.
