Gesswein was a Lutheran minister who for several years had been organizing regular monthly prayer meetings of Los Angeles area pastors to pray for spiritual renewal in the city. In late 1948, he had brought in J. Edwin Orr to speak to a larger prayer conference of ministers and lay people. Orr had met Graham when he was holding YFC rallies around Great Britain in 1946 and 1947 and had talked with him about the history and spiritual foundations of revivals and evangelism. In 1949, Gesswein and Orr worked with the Christ for Greater Los Angeles Committee to organize prayer support for the meeting, and they organized perhaps thousands into regular prayer groups.
