Walter Erdman's message reads: "You observe that the Eastern sun tans one very deeply! This is a picture of W. [William Borden] as he appeared in Jerusalem accompanied by the 'kawass' of the U.S. Consulate. Picture taken in the 'temple area' with the Tower of Antonia in the background. A kawass is a kind of social letter of credit and gives you 'standing' among Turkish and other officals. To visit the Temple one requires not only a kawaas but also a dragman [an interpreter] and a solider escort - the latter declined to be photographed. W.C.E. Printed on shipboard en route to Constantinople 24-IV-05"
