Evangelical Post Cards - A Little Humor
Saloon Smasher 1, ca. 1905

Previous Next

This was one of a series of humerous postcards by a British publisher based on stories of the militant American temperance worker, who is nowhere directly named. She used to smash beer barrels and taverns with her hatchet. Her actions were based on her strong Christian beliefs. Noticed had the pictures are so drawn so that the picture can be read as either applauding or mocking her, so that the cards might be bought by her supporters or detractors. "War path" was perhaps a term that Britishers would especially associated with the American Wild West.
