In the early part of 1856, Joseph K. Wight was on a small wooden ship, sailing to China to continue his service as a missionary.
He took some time over several days to write a letter to his brother back
in the United States. In his letter he described the journey, conditions
in China and personal matter. The letter says a great deal about the
expectations and conditions of being a missionary in the middle of the 19th century.
