January 2001: Rodney "Gipsy" Smith

Photograph from a 1935 newspaper clipping in Collection 109, Box 1, Folder 5.

Rodney "Gipsy" Smith (1860-1947) an English evangelist traveled throughout the world preaching the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His seventy years of ministry included approximately fifty visits to many cities in the United States. The Boston Post newspaper covering his meetings there in 1929 reported in the March 7th issue the following:

Gipsy Smith brought the simple story of repentance to 3200 souls in Tremont Temple last night. As he brought the service to a close with fervent plea, "Oh, Lord, save Boston, save Boston," hundreds rose to their feet in the crowded balconies and main floor asking him to pray for them while more than 100 made their way down the aisles to rooms on either side of the rostrum at Gipsy's invitation to kneel in prayer with him.

The "Gipsy" Smith collection (CN 109) of materials contains newspaper clippings, phonograph records, photographs, and audio tapes relating to his career. Click to go to the descriptive guide of this collection.
