| Wayne relocating furniture and wall decorations in preparation for the Reading Room renovation. |
One of the year's major events was the displacement of the 3rd floor Reading Room operation in mid-February for the renovation project (the last day of operation was February 20th). Largely through the effort and daily migration of Wayne and his several carts, staff provided services to the public in several locations (primarily the 4th floor Wilson Suite, but also the 4th floor Archives office). When the Manuscripts Reading Room reopened on August 14th, the archivists joined with staff from Wheaton College's Archives & Special Collections to provide supervision of both collections in the new Reading Room. Another major improvement gained through the renovation was the addition of the Archival Seminar Room adjacent to the Manuscript Reading Room on the 3rd floor. Equipped with ample seating and technological resources, archivists not only have more accommodating facilities to conduct orientation sessions, but can simultaneously keep the Reading Room open to other patrons. The Seminar Room occupies the space previously used for the BGC Library's microfilm room, now part of the public area and including a computer-based film and card reader. Renovations on the 4th floor office were completed early in the year. By mid-Fall, new storage on mobile shelving was added to the 3rd floor storage area developed for Archives & Special Collections. Service was also completed on the 4th floor mobile shelving to extend its lifespan for storing the processed Archives collections. |
