Scope and Content
Lynn Charter was interviewed by Robert Shuster on September 26, 2005 at the offices of the Billy Graham Center Archives. The events described in the interview cover the time period 1921-1987.
T1 (94 minutes). Family background, describes father and mother, attends a Christian church and is baptized there but is not “born again,” mother leaves his father because of his alcoholism, effect of living during the Great Depression, childhood ambition to become an artist, conversion, reaction of his friends, his mother’s heading, his baptism in the Spirit and speaking in tongues, effect of his conversion on his life, hunger for God, mother’s divorce and remarriage, attending LIFE Bible College in Los Angeles, working to earn money to attend college, description of Angelus Temple, Aimee Semple McPherson: her meetings and preaching style, work as an usher and a janitor at Angelus Temple, praying at the Angelus Temple and at school, classes he took, selling vanilla extract and upholstering furniture, his ministry at the Saturday night mission on skid row, his mother attending LIFE Bible School, the kidnaping of McPherson, the services at Angelus Temple and the people who came, Phil Kerr interviewing those who attend the services, opening of the Dream Center, Charter ordained by McPherson, impact of the death of McPherson on the church, decision to go on an evangelistic tour of the Far East with Dr. Harold Chalfant.
T2 (25 minutes). Far East tour (Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan), draws pictures and plays his guitar at the meetings and preaches at some them, the churches he served in for the Foursquare Church, changes in the Foursquare Church when the charismatic movement came in, Rolf McPherson, his prayer life.
