Historical Background

Conference name

The Trinary Consultation

Conference venue

Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois, United States of America

Conference dates

March 14-17, 1986

Conference theme

A Consultation on Evangelizing World Class Cities

Conference background

The Trinary Committee had been formed by Moody Bible Institute (MBI), Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS), and the Wheaton College Graduate School (WCGS) to plan projects in which the three Chicago-area institutions could cooperate. The 1986 consultation was to be the first of these. Planning began in 1984.

Conference purpose

Study of the implications of the growth around the world of cities of four million people or more and the most effective means of Christian witness in these urban settings

Attendance figures

136 registrants, 50 program participants, 79 students for a total of 265. Of these, 79 were from one of three sponsoring institutions.

Conference figures

Chairman of Program Committee

J. Ray Tallman (MBI)

Chairman of Findings Committee

Arthur Johnson (TEDS)

Other members of Program Committee

Wayne Dezler (TEDS), John Gration (WCGS), Jim Kraakevik (WCGS/Billy Graham Center), Melvin Lorentzen (WCGS/ Billy Graham Center)

Other member of Findings Committee

Les Keylock (MBI)

Financial support

Mission leaders, people in urban ministries, pastors, professors and students were invited to attend. All except the students were charged a registration fee. The three institutional sponsors also probably gave support by providing funds and/or staff

Post-conference resources

There had been discussion of publishing a book of papers from the conference, to be edited by Melvin E. Lorentzen, but this was apparently not done.

Meyer and George Sweeting. The meeting approved “The Trinary Affirmations on Evangelizing World Class Cities” and these can be found in folder 1-8.
