Conference background |
The Trinary Committee had been formed by Moody Bible Institute (MBI), Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS), and the Wheaton College Graduate School (WCGS) to plan projects in which the three Chicago-area institutions could cooperate. The 1986 consultation was to be the first of these. Planning began in 1984. |
Conference purpose |
Study of the implications of the growth around the world of cities of four million people or more and the most effective means of Christian witness in these urban settings |

Planning materials can be found in folder 1-7. The five central papers and the written responses to him are contained in the conference notebook in folder 1-3. This includes papers by Raymond Bakke, Roger Greenway, Walter Kaiser, Ralph Neighbor, and Emilio Nunez and responses by Stephen Franklin, Bruce W. Jones, Leslie Keylock, Lloyd C. Lindo, Alvaro L. Nieves, Bong Rin Ro, Oscar I. Romo, James A. Speer, and Ruth Tucker. The conference book in folder 1-4 has only the papers, not the responses, and only one item not in the notebook in folder 1-3, a list of notes that may be for Bakke’s paper. The materials in this notebook also is underlined in places and has a few notes. It may have been the notebook used by Melvin Lorentzen when he was attempting to make a book out of the consultation’s proceedings. Other materials relating to the book project are in folder 1-1, including brief papers by the presidents of each of the sponsoring institutions, J. Richard Chase, Kenneth M. Meyer and George Sweeting. The meeting approved “The Trinary Affirmations on Evangelizing World Class Cities” and these can be found in folder 1-8. Folder 1-9 contains a report and meeting minutes by the event’s planners, evaluating the conference and drawing lessons from the experience.
