Historical Background

Church of England mission organization; formed in 1701 as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts; renamed following a merger with Universities' Mission to Central Africa in 1965.




Scope and Content

Missionary reports and correspondence from S.P.G. mission stations in Accra, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, and West Africa. Includes correspondence of eighteenth century missionaries Thomas Thompson and Philip Quaque, and correspondence of the twentieth century Committee for Women's Work. The collection was microfilmed from originals in possession of the U.S.P.G. in London.
