Historical Background
Chartered in 1698, the S.P.C.K. was one of the oldest organizations for Christian work founded under the auspices of the Church of England. It operated all through the period covered by this collection on private subscription of members, and was a close, self-perpetuating body intimately connected with the Anglican Church, but responsible only to its elected authorities. Its president was customarily the Archbishop of Canterbury, aided by a host of vice presidents--various archbishops and bishops of the church.
The S.P.C.K.'s stated endeavor followed along five major subordinate organizations. The Bible and Prayerbook Society of the Church of England was dedicated to circulating these two cornerstones of the Church; the Tract and Pure Literature Society distributed religious literature and other "elevating" material. The Home Church Mission and Education Society and the Foreign and Colonial Missionary Society carried on obvious programs. The Emigrants' Spiritual Aid Society gave emigrants devotional and other religious literature, provided them with spiritual care and instruction while crossing the high seas, and saw to spiritual and temporal aid upon their reaching port.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of the microfilmed archives of the first century of S.P.C.K. endeavor. These papers are arranged in four series: A - Minutes and Reports (reels 1-10); B - Financial Records (reels 11-20); C - Letters and Memorials (reels 21-33); D - Special Subjects (reels 34-41). The minutes, reels 1-7, are indexed at the beginning of each volume. See following Location Record for more detailed description of collection contents.
