Historical Background
In 1964, the Australian minister, Rev. Norman Pell, who had worked with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in his own country, came to the United States to work full time for the BGEA directing the preparations made for Leighton Ford's crusades. Pell's duties were similar to those of the Field Director of Associate Crusades - he helped choose the BGEA staff members to work on a particular crusade, maintained contacts with the crusade executive committee, sometimes taught classes for those who might be involved in counseling and follow-up work, and generally supervised the set-up work. Others from the BGEA involved in Leighton Ford crusades are listed in the addendum. In 1970, Pell returned to Australia to work for the Baptist Union and Rev. Irv Chambers became Director of Planning and Programming.
Leighton Ford Crusades, although handled by a team separated from both the one that handled Billy Graham's crusades and the one that handled the associate evangelists' crusades, followed the same basic model in preparations, meetings, and follow-up. Fund-raising, arrangements, prayer groups, etc., were handled by committees of local people working closely with BGEA personnel who had set up a crusade office in the area months before the actual meetings. Preparation for Ford's crusades was more intensive than that customary for the associate evangelists. As with crusades for other BGEA evangelists, preparation included several Christian Life and Witness classes mainly, but not exclusively, for people who had volunteered to counsel inquirers at the crusades. During the actual period of the crusade meetings, two interesting features of some of Leighton Ford's meetings were a Social Action Night when Ford introduced local Christians involved in some form of Christian philanthropic work which they described and a radio talk show in which listeners phoned in questions for Ford.
Leighton Ford announced plans to form his own ministry on August 22, 1985. He formed Leighton Ford Ministries on June 5, 1986, appearing in only a couple BGEA crusades thereafter.
Some files in this collection deal with the crusades of other BGEA evangelists. Most of these
files relate to 1965 when the association held over a dozen crusades in British Columbia, Canada,
including a joint Billy Graham - Leighton Ford Crusade. Association staff members working on
Ford's crusade also helped to coordinate the other meetings going on in the province.
Scope and Content
[NOTE: In the Scope and Content description, the notation "Folder 2-5" means Box 2, Folder 5.]
The material in this collection includes photographs, filmstrips, videotapes, films, and various types of paper records, such as correspondence, memos, newsletters, budgets, minutes of meetings, shipping orders, invoices, schedules, newspaper clippings, and press releases. In content these records relate almost entirely to various aspects of Leighton Ford crusades. The collection contains many sample books prepared for various crusades. These sample books contain all the handout forms, press releases, etc., prepared for that particular crusade. By studying these sample books. in conjunction with the correspondence in the files marked "General" the researcher can get a pretty good idea of how the typical crusade is organized, the personnel and resources it requires, and results.
Of special interest are materials which illustrate the problems and rewards of mass evangelism in greater detail. For example, folder 1-10 contains a series of letters by BGEA Crusade Coordinator, Dr. Victor Nelson, describing his setup work in several different Canadian communities and describing the particular needs of each. Folder 1-7 contains some of the handouts the association gave to local crusade committees to help them plan their budgets, including sheets on typical expenses and how to estimate income. Materials in folder 11-27 outlines for the crusade executive committee BGEA financial policies, including the plan to have a published audit at the end of the crusade, no salary or honorarium to the evangelist, and two offerings going back to the BGEA. Many folders show the problems the Association had getting the local organizations to complete the follow-up auditing paperwork. Folder 4-22 had records illustrating the planning and negotiation that went into the radio and newspaper publicity campaigns prepared for each crusade, while folder 5-31 has a "how-to" notebook on ways to organize dinners for prominent local leaders to explain the crusade to them. This collection contains some of the films and tapes of television and radio commercials used, as well as tapes of various training classes held for volunteers and a filmstrip-audio tape presentation called Impact intended to win support for the crusade.
To document the actual crusade meetings, the collection contains newspaper clippings, press releases, films and tapes of the sermons, and statistics describing immediate results. Many folders contain indications of more long-term reactions. Folder 1-20 contains an evaluation of the 1963 Ford crusade written by a seminary student. This evaluation includes an analysis of questionnaires answered both by inquirers and local ministers involved in the work. Folder 2-7 contains the results of a survey taken of another crusade. Folders 1-15 and 11-9 contain, as do many other folders, letters detailing the response of ministers and laymen to the meetings.
The materials received from the BGEA in December 1982 and January 1984 are a continuation of the crusade folders in the original collection. Thus for most crusades there are files on publicity, budget, executive committee, office, schedules, ministers, and finance. Files on invoices, shipping, and purchase orders have been disposed of, since they dealt mostly with supplies needed for a crusade (or Reachout, as the later meetings were called), such as chairs, bumper stickers, etc., and have little permanent value. Because the folder titles are much the same for each crusade, the container list for boxes 13 through 20 gives only the box by box contents, indicating which crusades are in which boxes, rather than a folder by folder list. Of particular interest are the folders on the Charlottesville, Virginia, Outreach in 1972 which document Ford's association with black evangelist Tom Skinner. There is much more information on the 1976 Vancouver Reachout than on the others. Folders for Leighton Ford crusades after 1977 are in Collection 17.
The materials received from Leighton Ford in May 1983 consist of testimonies gathered by Mrs. G. W. Ham from people who had been converted at Ford's 1961 crusade in Queensland, Australia, or at Graham's 1959 crusade in Australia and who had participated in Ford's crusade. There is also a letter and article by Mrs. Ham describing the crusade and its follow-up. Ham makes some interesting comparisons between the 1959 and 1961 crusades.
NOTE ON ORGANIZATION:
Except for a few miscellaneous folders in the first box, the folders in this collection are arranged chronologically according to crusade dates. The folders for each crusade are arranged alphabetically. Folder titles have been somewhat expanded from the original by the addition of dates and the complete crusade name. Separate folders containing newspaper clippings, arranged according to crusade, have been combined with the other folders for their particular crusade. Sample books have also been filed according to crusade.
Provenance
The materials in this collection were in part deposited in the Billy Graham Center Archives by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 1977, 1982, 1984, and 1991, and in part given by Leighton Ford in 1983.
