Restrictions
All materials in this collection are on deposit from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and may not be copied without written permission from the BGEA.
Any researcher who wishes to request permission must get the required form from the Archives staff. It is the responsibility of the researcher to fill out the form and send it to the BGEA.
Historical Background
The Crusade Director's duties included setting up a crusade office in the city where the crusade was to be held, arranging for personnel to serve on crusade committees, in the choir, and as ushers and counselors, advertising the crusade, and coordinating the activities of BGEA team members and office staff.
Because a knowledge of the organizational history of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
(BGEA) would also be helpful in using this collection, a brief history of the organization is
available. Ask the Archives staff to see a copy or view the copy at the Archives Web site at:

Scope and Content
Series: Harry Williams
Arrangement: Chronological by crusade, alphabetical within each crusade subseries
Date range: 1963-1976
Volume: 8.6 cubic feet
Boxes: 3 record cartons (3.3 cf), 13 document cases (5.3 cubic feet)
Type of documents: Correspondence, memos, meeting agendas and minutes, financial reports,
statistical reports, forms, form letters, posters, maps, blueprints, photos, and negatives, relating to
Williams' activities as Crusade Director for eleven different crusades between the mid-1960s to
mid-70s.
Level of description: The collection when initially processed in 1976 consisted of boxes 1, 2
and 3. The CONTAINER LIST for those boxes included folder titles for each file. Due to staff
limitations, the expansion of the collection in 1998 to include boxes 4 through 18 could not
include the same level of detail, and the first page of the CONTAINER LIST contains description
for all eighteen boxes at the box level only. However, the folder title descriptions for the first
three boxes were retained and follow on subsequent pages.
Correspondents: Community ministers, crusade committee chairs and staff, BGEA staff and
Team members, Walter Smyth, Robert Jones (Associate Crusade Director), Harry Williams
Subjects: Evangelistic work, crusade organization
Crusades:
San Diego (1964), Hawaii (1965), Heart O' Texas (Waco, 1965), Houston (1965),
Centennial (Winnipeg, 1967), Pacific Northwest (1968), Louisiana (Baton Rouge, 1970),
Northern California (Oakland, 1971), Charlotte (1972), Atlanta (1973), Virginia Bicentennial
Festival of Faith (1976)
Notes:
Most of the records deal directly with Williams' activities as crusade director. There are
common filing cat administrative, advisory, arrangements, choir, counseling & follow-up,
executive, finance, group reservations, medical, music, prayer, ushers, visitation, youth), types of
documents (advertisements, correspondence, financial records, forms, incorporation papers, lists,
maps, press releases, printed materials, publications, reports, schedules, statistics, etc.). Some
folders for the crusades spanning the years 1970-1973 were found empty. However, some of
these folders functioned as a section divider, and they were therefore retained. These files have
been labeled on the front flap to indicate this. These folders have not been numbered, but the
label is accompanied by a note identifying the folders between which it is located. Other empty
folders which played no clerical function were discarded. Also included are files documenting
the Billy Graham Foundation, of which Williams was the Executive Director. Williams' records
also include the files of his Associate Crusade Director, Robert Jones (See following for a
description of these). Some duplicates were removed from the collection and disposed of at the
request of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association; photographs of BGEA Team members
which duplicated those already in other Archives collections were also discarded.
Exceptional items:
There is some correspondence in boxes 1 through 3 protesting or praising
Dr. Graham's stand on presidential elections and on Vietnam. The statistics file (folder 11-6) for
the Northern California Crusade also includes figures for the Southern California Crusade, which
was held the same summer. Williams' files include documentation about efforts to cooperate
with African Americans in the Charlotte Crusade (folder 12-28).
*****
Subseries: Robert Jones (Associate Crusade Director)

Jones' files, divided into two further subseries, cover primarily the Atlanta
crusade. The first subseries, arranged alphabetically by subject (such as Advertizing, Council of
Ministers, Insurance, etc.) with crusades interfiled, also documents the crusades in Northern Ohio
(Cleveland), Northern California (Oakland), and Louisiana (Baton Rouge). A second subseries
documents only the Atlanta Crusade.

Team members, Walter Smyth, Robert Jones, Harry Williams
